OHPI is running a day-long campaign “Unity in Diversity on Australia Day” all day on January 26. The campaign features images the public can share on social media with the promotion of Australian values such multiculturalism, religious pluralism, respecting people’s dignity, mateship, volunteering, and commitment to the rule of law. It will also encourage the public to take positive action by reporting any hate speech seen on the day. We’re also shares the thoughts of our Indigenous supporters, many of whom see the choice of January 26th as our national day is highly problematic,  read more on the different meanings of Australia DayWe’re raising the funds to promote these images through crowd sourcing; any help is appreciated as time is running out!

Reporting Hate

Please help us report any online racism or religious vilification you see on Australia day. This is a day for all Australians.

To report online hate:

  1. First report it to the social media platform (see how)
  2. Then report it to FightAgainstHate.com (see how)

This allows us to track how the companies respond to your reports. FightAgainstHate.com creates transparency so we can call social media companies out when reports of hate speech are rejected for “not violating our community standards”. Help us push the social media companies to do more while we assert Australia values and community standards which reject racism, bigotry and hate.

Why this campaign on this day?

This past year has seen a rise of far right groups who have used our national symbols to promote messages of hate, bigotry and fear of minorities. As we discuss in this briefing, they are using Australia Day to attack minorities. We need to fight back. On Australia Day we need to reclaim these symbols and promote the real values that make us proud to be Australian. Bigotry, racism and hate are not values we want Australia to be known for around the world. This Australia Day let’s promote the values we support, and report the hate that seeks to undermine our shared values.

In the week leading up to Australia we are creating a gallery of images and memes promoting shared Australian values. We’ll also have a set of image promoting the reporting of hate messages such as those pushed by the far right. These images will be available on the day through our website. You will be able to share them on your own social media accounts and we will be promoting both through our social media accounts and through paid advertising.

As we encourage people to report hate to the social media platforms we will also be asking them to register their reports at FightAgainstHate.com. This will help us track how many items are reported on Australia Day and the response of the platforms to these hate reports. We’ll be sharing relevant reports with the relevant government agencies so that action can be taken by police in cases of racial or religious vilification.

Our campaign will also include the unique Indigenous Australian view, which looks upon January 26th as “Invasion Day” and the Australian flag as a continued symbol of British colonisation. To can read more on how we want to include their perspective in our campaign.

Crowd Funding

To meet our adverting costs for this campaign we launched a modest crowd-funding appeal to raise $1000. We hope you help us raise the funds for this campaign to promote the messages of Australian values, and help make this Australia Day a day for celebrating all Australians. We’re really like to see a lot of people giving a fiver to show support for this campaign.
