At the AGM of the Jewish Community Council of Victoria tonight. Keynote speakers are Commissioner Kate Jenkins of the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission and Commissioner Helen Kapalos, Chairperson of the Victorian Multicultural Commission.
Both spoke about Victoria’s promotion of social cohesion. Commissioner Kapalos quoted extensively from the writing of former Chief Rabbi of the Commonwealth, Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks on the question of identity.
Commissioner Kapalos spoke about the concerns youth consulted by the VMC raised regarding the media’s failure to distinguish between extremists and segments of the community. She also spoke about the Indigenous community, and the way they work towards connectedness.
