“The creeping normalisation of antisemitism in Australia” – Article in The Jewish Independent

The Jewish Independent recently published an article about antisemitism in Australia by our CEO, Dr Andre Oboler. The article discusses our new report on the online response to the recent synagogue attacks in Melbourne. Oboler discusses a variety of problematic online responses to the attack that are discussed in our report, including users who celebrate the attacks, claim they were justified, or dismiss them as false flags.

The article also discusses those users dismiss all claims of antisemitism as legitimate pro-Palestinian advocacy. Oboler advocates for the adoption of an official definition of antisemitism that can help us determine when anti-zionism becomes antisemitic. We ought to reject both the notion that anti-Zionism is automatically antisemitic, and also that anti-Zionism is never antisemitic. As such, we need a definition that can help us to determine those cases in which anti-Zionism does bleed into antisemitism.
