OHPI 2024 Review – First quarter

During the first quarter of 2024 OHPI published 6 Briefings, 2 reports, and 2 newsletters. OHPI was also mentioned in 2 media articles.

2024 for OHPI has been dominated by work on antisemitism. This is due to a flood of antisemitic responses to the October 2023 Terrorist attack on Israel.

As 2024 began, OHPI was already in the midst of a project to monitor the online responses to the October 2023 attack in Israel. This was to compare rates of online antisemitism and anti-Muslim hate from before October 7 to those following the attack. The Data from this project was compiled into a report called Online Antisemitism After October 7 which was published, alongside a similar report Online Antisemitism Before October 7, near the end of March.

Besides the two reports, OHPI published 3 briefings covering antisemitism during the first quarter of 2024.

Early 2024 also saw a significant rise in racism against First Nations people. There is a spike every January around Australia day, but this was added to by the referendum held in October 2023 regarding the First Nations voice to parliament. A team of 12 undergraduate and postgraduate law students were able to capture and analyse 42 000 items which were used to compile 3 briefings. One described the process used to find and collect the data used, one covered the racism uncovered, and one covered the problem of election disinformation which could affect voters’ decision.
