During the third quarter of 2024 OHPI published 21 Briefings, 1 report, and 3 newsletters. OHPI was also mentioned in 5 media articles.
In the third quarter of 2024 OHPI was able to publish 21 briefings on a number of subjects. 11 of the briefings covered topics of antisemitism, with 3 covering LGBTQIA+ related hate, 2 covering cyberbullying, 2 racism/xenophobia briefings, 1 misogyny briefing, 1 Anti-muslim hate briefing, and a briefing that investigated X (Twitter) not enforcing the site content policies.
A highlight of the third quarter was the international police training session which addressed online hate targeting Muslims and Jews. The training was held at Brussel’s South Police Headquarters and attended by law enforcement officers from the Australian Federal Police and multiple state police forces in Australia, as well as police from Europol, Brussels, UK, the Netherlands, Italy, Switzerland, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Philippines, Brazil and more via an online broadcast.
Another notable moment was OHPI’s submission to the Australian Government’s Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts which related to the review of the 2021 Online Safety Act.
In August OHPI released the Online Anti-Muslim Hate and Racism Against Palestinians and Arabs report which analysed examples taken from 1169 recorded items of hate collected over 3 and a half months after october 7 2023. The report was featured on ABC News (TV, radio and online) along with interviews of CEO Dr. Andre Oboler and one of the analysts responsible for monitoring social media and capturing the data used.
Also in August, OHPI staff from Adelaide, Bendigo, Bundaberg, Melbourne, and Sydney met in Melbourne for a face to face training meeting to discuss and prepare for the community focused training program for recognising and responding to online hate.
