International Engagement
Our CEO presented to the “Asia Pacific Regional Forum on Hate Speech, Social Media and Minorities”, a 2-day online event convened by the Tom Lantos Institute and United Nations Special Rapporteur for Minority Issues. He also served as the panellist for Civil Society in the UN’s 13th Session of the Forum on Minority Issues.
OHPI’s CEO & Managing Director continues to serve on the Australian Government’s delegation to the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance and on IHRA’s antisemitism committee in particular. Over this reporting period, we have assisted IHRA in tracking the adoption of the IHRA Working Definition of Antisemitism and advised the Australian Government concerning IHRA matters and the adoption of the Working Definition in particular.
OHPI’s Chairman Mark Civitella, Director Nasya Bahfen and CEO Dr Andre Oboler presented at the Hate Speech in Asia Conference on a panel on “COVID and Combating the Rise of Hate Speech”.
Our CEO, Dr Andre Oboler, presented to the Inter-Parliamentary Task Force on Online Antisemitism at its first meeting with experts. We briefed members of the Australian Parliament, US Congress, UK Parliament, Canadian Parliament, and Israeli Knesset on the changes to online antisemitism over recent years and the pipeline from hate to terrorism.
There were also presentations to an online panel run by the Italian Government on “Online Antisemitism and Hate Conspiracy in Internet Time” and another online event hosted by the Jewish Heritage Centre of Western Canada on the topic of “IHRA’s Working Definition of Antisemitism”.
Training and Education
Training programs and workshops on identifying and tackling hate speech were run for several groups, including Council of Christians and Jews Victoria (CCJ), World Union of Progressive Judaism, Interfaith Alliance for Safer Communities, YaLa Young Leaders, and the Peres Center for Peace and Innovation, University of Cape Town. Details of what these programs focussed on are available in the report.
Special Focus on the Coronavirus & Anti-Asian Hate Project
The Online Hate Prevention Institute established a special project in April 2020 focused on the Coronavirus: Racism, Hate Speech and Fake News. This project has been sustained and expanded through the current reporting cycle with six additional briefings related to COVID and online hate.
Ramadan Events
We ran two Ramadan online events as part of Facebook’s “Month of Good” campaign.
Our first event was on ‘Resilience in Ramadan’ and featured a panel discussion exploring issues around digital hate.
Our second event features an international speaker, a young Palestinian peace advocate, Amira Sublaban, who spoke about her work bringing people together in Jerusalem
Campaign on Holocaust Denial and Distortion
As we have done in past years, we ran a campaign to remember victims of the Holocaust and to tackle Holocaust denial on International Holocaust Memorial Day. As usual, the campaign received antisemitic and Holocaust denial responses which were documented and discussed.
