On Tuesday 15 October 2013 OHPI held it’s Annual General Meeting. The meeting approved the operating report (below) and the audited financials on OHPI’s first financial year. As a new organisation, our financial year extended for almost 18 months. A huge amount was achieved and we are excited to make the operating report public. As co-chair of the Working Group on Antisemitism on the Internet and in the Media, OHPI’s CEO, Dr Andre Oboler, delivered a summary of the Working Group’s meeting and plan of action to the plenary. The Working Group was made up of about 50 international experts in the field of online hate and the plenary included 450 people including government ministers from various countries, diplomats, Jewish community leaders, leaders from NGOs combating antisemitism, academics and members of the press. In the lead-up to ANZAC day 2013 an internet troll began creating a series of pages mocking ANZAC veterans. The pages were designed to cause public outrage in both Australia and New Zealand. The Online Hate Prevention Institute (OHPI) documented these hate pages and regularly updated Facebook, law enforcement and relevant government departments. Our efforts, assisted by volunteers, many of them war veterans, ensured the pages were found and closed with minimum impact. The Online Hate Prevention Institute released a major new report into antisemitism on Facebook to coincide with the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on March 21st 2013. The new report tracks the response to a number of antisemitic items on Facebook. Some of the items were included in OHPI’s previous report in 2012 into Aboriginal Memes and Online Hate, others are new in 2013. The report shows how some items are removed by Facebook while others remain online, some for more than 6 months. The primary aim of this report is to demonstrate and discuss the problem of multiple and severe instances of hate speech on the YouTube platform. Aspects of this analysis apply equally to other forms of social media content and to other platforms. The report both describes the problem and provides some recommendations to mitigate and control the problem. This report demonstrates how one user, with one account, was able to upload 1710 videos in a single day. The vast majority of these videos promoted online hate. At the invitation of the Federal Liberal and National Parties, the Online Hate Prevention Institute participated in a round table and made a written submission as part of the Coalitions Review of Online Safety for Children. OHPI’s submission note that while cyberbullying is recognized as a significant online threat to children, it has a fairly narrow definition and other forms of hate are excluded, for example online racism targeting communities at large rather than specific individuals.
