Our CEO Dr Andre Oboler writes for the ABC about the recent release of Australia’s Special Envoy to Combat Antisemitism’s Plan to Combat Antisemitism, which follows a series of serious antisemitic attacks in Melbourne. Oboler provides a summary and analysis of the recommendations that are outlined in the plan, which include the adoption of the IHRA working definition on antisemitism, the need for broader and more consistent education on the nature of antisemitism, and instilling accountability for institutions like Universities who persistently fail to address issues with antisemitism.
Oboler commends the Special Envoy on her bold and wholistic plan to tackle antisemitism, and also makes some further recommendations for helping to stem to tide of antisemitism in Australia. These include making greater use of our membership in the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance and integrating it more with our domestic responses, and providing funding to civil society efforts to address antisemitism (outside the security funding the government already provides).
