OHPI turns 14

On January 23rd 2012 the Online Hate Prevention Institute (OHPI) was incorporated as an Australian charity. Established as a Harm Prevention Charity, it’s mission is to prevent harm to people as a result of online hate and extremism.

We tackles all forms of online hate. The topics we have covered most regularly include: Antisemitism, Islamophobia, Racism against First Nations Australians, anti-Asian racism, other racism, misogyny, hate targeting the LGBTIQ+ community (yes, that includes transphobia), violent extremism, Holocaust denial, Trolling, Cyberbullying, and Griefing. We have also covered a wide range of other topics with less frequency including misandry, hate targeting our ANZAC veterans, emergency services, politicians, and more. We tackle all forms of online hate to make the online world safer for everyone.

Our work is supported by public donations. For our birthday, from January 23rd until Safer Internet Day on February 10th, we invite the public to make a donation to support our mission making the internet a safer place for everyone.

Our impact

Our impact in 2025 included:

  • Collecting, archiving, and tracking over 10,000 items of hate.
  • We published 35 articles examining different kinds of hate and helping to explain them (our briefings), and 4 major reports.
  • We supported both police and private litigants with expert evidence in cases on racism and extremism.
  • We trained civil society volunteers and law enforcement in recognising and responding to online hate.
  • We worked with social media platforms to improve both their understanding of online hate and working to close the enforcement gap between their policies and what we see online.
